Life as a Medical Student: Things you need to Know

Becoming a medical student is not easy; there are plenty of off-putting myths about being a medical student, but in reality, the student- life is itself enjoyable, interesting and highly rewarding, especially in light of what you are working towards.

1.     You will be able to use what you learn for the rest of your life

It is the very truth which not only related to the case of medicine only, but it is related to all areas of study, including Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Pharmacology and Pathology all being directly applicable in diagnosing, understanding and treating a disease. Studying medicine is a lifelong learning, which builds your basis of professional knowledge throughout your medical career.

2.    Sometimes it is hard work

Studying medicine comes with a certain expectation to work harder on average than most other students. There are generally more contact hours than other subjects with the practical session and lectures, which take up a great deal of time. Passing the medical exam can often require cramming a great deal of knowledge in a small space of time and this can be stressful, but the reward after exams is a long summer to enjoy.

3.    There are a lot more than only hard work

But there is no need of being stressed. Even though there are lots of studies needs to be done; there also is plenty of time to enjoy being an undergraduate, an experience that many people say is the best time of their life. What a medical student needs to do is, he/ she needs to manage his/ her overall activities/ schedules with the study.

4.    Medicine is a long course

No way to deny that medicine is a long course like the marathon. It is a 5 to 6 years course where students need to learn basic scientific principles and the Clinical Skills for the practical approach.

5.    It is not the only medical skill that matters

Going through the medical course and becoming a doctor is absolutely much more than medicine. Apart from the study, there are lots of soft skills are in need; those are communication, listening, teamwork, leadership and critical thinking are all equally important. Volunteering work during the course is very good for personality development.

6.    Opportunities for learning never end

Undoubtedly, it is an accomplished study and it is not limited only to theoretical knowledge, it includes internship, residency and possible fellowships.  Yet apart from this, there is an endless possibility of learning and also there are endless ways to take your knowledge and skills to the next level. This is one of the most satisfactory things since becoming a doctor; the fulfillment of both personal and professional level.
